Matthew Hayes' Home Truths
1. The song to put a smile on your face…
Under Pressure - Queen & David Bowie. We loved Queen as kids, because our Dad did. ‘Made in Heaven’ was one of the first albums I ever bought (after The Lion King soundtrack and Wet Wet Wet’s Picture This). This song always comes back to me. Each time I listen to it I picture a late evening under the stars with my family, with our favourite songs being played out to each other. Under Pressure was selected by two of my brothers, who passionately explained the story of the song, charting its melody and lyrics. There’s no song quite like it.
2. You can only watch one film for the next three months… What is it?
Armageddon. A 90s classic (the best decade for movies in my view). My favourite line… “I can pretty much guarantee it won’t be thicker than fifty feet?” How do you figure that? “Because if it is we’re screwed.” Life principle right there!
3. The TV series you want everyone to watch:
Zen. Just damn cool. Rufus Sewell drinking espresso for breakfast. Rome, but everyone speaks English.
4. The book you most recommend to people:
Circe by M Miller. Extraordinarily beautiful writing, but not at all overwrought. A story of ancient Greek gods, which nonetheless captures what it is to be human better than anything I’ve ever read.
5. The subject you’ve put off exploring that’s now top of your to-do list:
To be honest I’m finding it hard to explore new things at the moment. I work in research, so my thinking keeps returning to what we can be doing around COVID-19. Being able to spend more time with our 2-year-old daughter is the way my wife and I get through this.
6. The wild card you wish more people knew about…
Meganissi. A tiny Greek island. Go off-season and you’ll have it to yourselves.
7. We’re allowed dinner parties again… What are you cooking?
I’m not, we’ll be going out!
8. Everything’s back open. What’s the first coffee shop, restaurant or pub you’re visiting?
Gail’s in Temple Fortune. We really miss the team there.
P.S. What you know now, that you wish you knew then…
How differently businesses respond. Think the Now Show said it best - this crisis is rapidly becoming the sorting hat for bastards.
C’est fini... Now what?
