Becky Okell Home Truths

Everyone, this is Becky. Why ask her for her Home Truths? Cos she’s one half of Paynter Jacket - a company making the best jackets, with the best materials, in a way that’s best for the environment.

1. The song to put a smile on your face…

My Silver Lining - First Aid Kit. It always reminds me of a very special person, my grandma.

2. You can only watch one film for the next three months… What is it?

Parent Trap!

3. The TV series you want everyone to watch:

Sex Education. The interior design is next level.

4. The book you most recommend to people:

Quiet by Susan Cain. It’s about how extraversion became the ideal personality type through advertising and how it's not the only way to be. Susan is herself an introvert, she explores both ends of the spectrum in-between dissecting what gives and takes energy from each personality type. As an introvert myself, this book genuinely helped me better understand myself as well as others around me. It's a must-read.

5. The subject you’ve put off exploring that’s now top of your to-do list

Reading more. And starting earlier so I don't fall asleep on the second page.

6. The wild card you wish more people knew about…

My friend Cat's incredible newsletter about what she's cooking. It's so far from a generic food blog. Her writing is astonishingly good and I can't wait to watch this newsletter transform into something bigger, if she wants it to. If not, that's just as great too!

7. We’re allowed dinner parties again… What are you cooking?

For starters, a (bought) loaf of sourdough with homemade date butter. I'm dairy-free so I'll buy a good vegan butter (if you're not, go for a salted butter) and then blend it with sea salt and Medjool dates (remove the stones). It's like crack (I imagine anyway!).

For main I'll make gnocchi, or an Ottolenghi throw-it-all-in dish with some good wine flowing.

And for pudding an olive oil based choc mouse. Yum.

And then we'll play the after 8s game, where every one pops one on their forehead and we see who can wriggle it into their mouth first. It's a definite crowd-pleaser.

8. Everything’s back open. What’s the first coffee shop, restaurant or pub you’re visiting?

Pavilion in Victoria Park.

P.S. What you know now, that you wish you knew then…

I have a better work-life balance now and am enjoying the slower pace like I'd always wished I would but hadn't quite managed to before!

C’est fini... Now what?
