Nick Friend's Home Truths

Nick Friend home truths.jpeg

Everyone, this is Nick. Why ask him for his Home Truths? Cos he’s my future brother-in-law, and his answer to question four is exactly what' I’d go for…

1. The song to put a smile on your face…

Boys of Summer - Don Henley (or the cover by The Ataris). It takes me back to simpler times. Best enjoyed with the sun in my face and a cold ale in my hand.

2. You can only watch one film for the next three months… What is it?

Dumb and Dumber. 20 years ago my good friend Russ and I watched it in the early hours before our A Level results. It’s very quotable, gifable, the soundtrack is superb and it always makes me laugh.

3. The TV series you want everyone to watch:

The Last Dance. I’m not even halfway through it (only two episodes are released every week), but its such a fascinating insight into one of basketball’s great teams - the Chicago Bulls. Michael Jordan… What a hero!

4. The book you most recommend to people:

All Hell Let Loose by Max Hastings. Having time to read is a luxury I don’t have much of at the moment. However, if you’re interested in the World Wars, then this is a brilliant summary of World War 2. Gritty but very digestible.

5. The subject you’ve put off exploring that’s now top of your to-do list:

I’ve been pining to work on the house and garden for some time, so that’s been the focus of the last couple of months. As soon as I start a job, I uncover another. The weather has certainly helped, but I’m loving home improvement. And mountain biking... Now that is a fun way to explore the local woods!

6. The wild card you wish more people knew about…

I’ve been working on our agency’s first podcast series this year. And it went live earlier in May. It’s been a bit of a labour of love but I think it’s a decent first throw. It’s called Leading Edge by Henley Business School and is an insightful dive into the future of leadership. It’s especially relevant in the current situation we’re in.

7. We’re allowed dinner parties again… What are you cooking?

Well, depending on the weather, it’d have to be a BBQ. I want to use our garden to host a shindig with friends. And it’s got to be butterfly lamb - I’ve been practising my butchery skills.

8. Everything’s back open. What’s the first coffee shop, restaurant or pub you’re visiting?

The Bottle and Glass in Henley. It’s our awesome local pub and a 30-minute walk from our house. They serve fresh pizza in their outdoor oven and local beer.

P.S. What you know now, that you wish you knew then…

Companies can trust their employees to work from home. This has been the catalyst for a much-needed working revolution. I hope things don’t just go back to where they were and companies properly embrace flexible working.

C’est fini... Now what?
