Rosie Hayes' Home Truths

Rosie Hayes Home Truths.jpg

Everyone, this is Rosie. Why ask her for her Home Truths? Cos she’s my sister (in-law, but it’s basically the same thing) and is currently homeschooling four children while I’m baking banana bread and completing Netflix…

1. The song to put a smile on your face…

Human - The Killers. It sums up a special time living in the Middle East and also got me running :)

2. You can only watch one film for the next three months… What is it?

Four Weddings and a Funeral. So quintessentially British and never fails to make me laugh.

3. The TV series you want everyone to watch:

Blue Planet. It changes people's respect and treatment of the natural world.

4. The book you most recommend to people:

Becoming by Michelle Obama. Particularly on Audible as she narrates it herself.

5. The subject you’ve put off exploring that’s now top of your to-do list

Re-reading my books on the history of British cabinet-making and its showpieces in England's historic houses. Fascinating but sadly something I never have time to indulge in.

6. The wild card you wish more people knew about…

Clover Stroud. She has led a fascinating and brave life and her honest account of her trouble finding herself in The Wild Other is inspiring. Plus her articles for The Telegraph often resonate with me.

7. We’re allowed dinner parties again… What are you cooking?

Things I can't get hold of right now so seared scallops to start with, followed by roasted monkfish and then an incredibly indulgent chocolate pudding. Ideally washed down with lots of bubbles as we will be celebrating seeing friends again!

8. Everything’s back open. What’s the first coffee shop, restaurant or pub you’re visiting?

The Enterprise on Walton Street. A London institution which would meet both the pub atmosphere, and the requisite glamour quota currently experiencing a drought at the moment!

P.S. What you know now, that you wish you knew then…

Focus more on nature - cut out the noise and media traffic, listen to the birds and watch out for Spring as it blossoms into life all around us - even if you just stick your head out the window it is there to be witnessed for free. We are lucky enough to be in the countryside and our children each have a scrapbook in which they are filling out a page per day on a new bit of wildlife they have learnt about… Simple pleasures!

C’est fini... Now what?
