Hugh Thomas' Home Truths

Everyone, this is Hugh. Why ask him for his Home Truths?

Cos he co-founded Ugly Drinks but, more importantly, he’s a proud Welshman like yours truly.

1. The song to put a smile on your face…

Don’t Stop - The Rolling Stones. Makes me think of mum dancing around at home thinking she’s Mick Jagger. The title of the song is also a motto for life.

2. You can only watch one film for the next three months… What is it?

Great question. I think I would pick Lost In Translation. There is so much to take from the movie and I love the aesthetic and soundtrack.

3. The TV series you want everyone to watch:

I think everyone should watch The Sopranos. Tony Soprano is the original anti-hero and the casting and acting is perfect.

4. The book you most recommend to people:

The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday. Stoicism has proved a useful concept many times to me on the Ugly journey.

5. The subject you’ve put off exploring that’s now top of your to-do list:

I wish I had more time to explore things and my reading list is stacked high right now, but I think the last few months have shown me just how much of the world I still have to see, so the travel bug is back in a big way.

6. The wild card you wish more people knew about…

I wish I knew more about Buddhist philosophy. I’ve got a bunch of books ready to read and delve into. I think many of the principles would have served me well over the last few months.

7. We’re allowed dinner parties again… What are you cooking?

I’ve been craving curry recently here in New York, so I’d probably hit the spice shops and build something special from scratch with all the sides!

8. Everything’s back open. What’s the first coffee shop, restaurant or pub you’re visiting?

The Exmouth Arms on Exmouth Market. I used to live nearby in London and have a bunch of friends still locally. It doesn’t look like I’ll be back in the UK this year, so the anticipation is big!

P.S. What you know now, that you wish you knew then…

Appreciate the little things in day to day life more. We HAD it SO GOOD. And this period has been amazingly eye opening. I don’t think we will forget to not take the little things for granted.

C’est fini... Now what?
